Stars Eternal
This has been a pretty sad week for America. On Tuesday, Ed McMahon passed. Though I didn’t know him personally, Ed was sort of like a grandfather-figure to me and those born in Generation X. Like my own “big daddy,” he was a guy who simply always was. Period. Other than remembering him from Johnny Carson re-runs, Star Search and hoping he would knock on our door as the host of Publisher Clearning’s House, I never really knew where he came from.
On Thursday morning, Farrah Fawcett lost her fight to cancer. Then later on Thursday, CBS news confirmed that Michael Jackson, the King of Pop was rushed to the hospital and later died from cardiac arrest.
We’re daily bombarded with images and up-to-the-minute news of talentless reality show-spawned personalities whom often become celebrities because of their weird, indecent, crude or mischievous behaviors.
I will always remember McMahon as the man who launched the careers of many of the talented entertainers we enjoy today. Though Fawcett came on the scene a “few” years before my time, I will always appreciate how she redefined beauty and sex appeal. Finally, I will always be in awe of Jackson’s ability to capture the admiration, amazement and even the devotion of people of all ages, races, nationalities and backgrounds.
Finally, as a communicator who wakes up everyday seeking ways to reach various audiences, I respect that McMahon, Fawcett and Jackson collectively appealed to every demographic in the nation.
May you all rest in peace. -EB
