Take time to ease, guage employee anxiety
Now more than ever, it's important that company leaders set the tone for a productive work place and not allow bad news, fear or panic, which easily circulates the country, to infect the attitude of employees. Leaders have an obligation to be pragmatic and at the same time make employees feel secure that every effort will be made to insure the company's future.
One may ask just how can such a contradictory task be done. We have to find ways of reinventing our businesses to conform to a tougher marketplace. One of the many ways we're redeveloping our company is through our web and social media presence, finding new revenue streams and shoring up our internal communications endeavors by taking our employees to lunch so they can discuss their concerns about the workplace.
A true leader never forgets that the success of a company is dictated by employee participation and encouragement. Lately, I've constantly reminded myself the buck starts and stops with me. As a leader, I've made a conscious decision to maintain an optimistic view of the times in which we do business, hoping that I inspire and motivate those who, daily, look to me for direction. -RB
